The user no longer has to export video media to the QuickTime Animation codec to use more than two tracks inside Boris FX. This feature utilizes the Media 100 Transcoder, a new component in Media 100 3.1 and later to decompress video in software without having to access the hardware codec. Because the transcoder is software-only, it will also work with previous versions of Media 100 (although at this time this has not been endorsed by Media 100). This feature requires QuickTime 2.5 and the Media 100 Transcoder (found in the Third Party folder on this CD).
• Preview to Media 100 Video Monitor
The user can now get full size previews to the video monitor attached to their Media 100 system. When this feature is enabled, the video monitor updates whenever the Boris FX preview does. The feature can be toggled on/off with a menu command as needed. The user can also send a single snapshot to the video monitor even if they have the feature disabled.
• Update Host Application Windows
The user can now move the Boris FX windows and Media 100 will update windows that are uncovered. This allows the user to refer back to their program, bin, or edit suite during the creation of effects.
• Draft Rendering Controlled by Media 100 Media Settings
When Media 100's effect media settings are set to draft, Boris FX will automatically render effects at draft quality. When the user changes the media settings to on-line and effects are re-rendered, Boris FX will be rendered at final quality. If the user wishes to render draft quality effects with the media settings set to on-line, they can override Media 100 in the Boris FX preferences dialog by unchecking the "Use Host Setting" checkbox.
• Timecode and Selectable Program or Absolute Time
The user can now select whether they want to see the effect times in terms of their Media 100 program or as absolute times (0-based). Times are displayed as SMTPE timecodes. Program timecodes will make it much easier for the user to sync effect actions to usermarks and edit points in their program. The user can also select an absolute frame count display like previous versions of Boris FX.
• Frame Size and Rate Automatically Set
The user no longer has to set the frame size or rate in the Boris FX preferences dialog. Switching between program formats in Media 100 will automatically tell Boris FX the proper frame size and rate of the program media.
Known Limitations:
• If you set the Media 100 timeline start time to something other than 0, the time for the start of the effect passed to Boris FX is incorrect... so view time by "program timecodes" will not be accurate. We are working with Media 100 to resolve this issue.
• Media 100 does not indicate to Boris FX whether NTSC timecode is drop frame or non-drop frame. All NTSC timecodes are displayed as non-drop frame. We are working with Media 100 to resolve this issue.
• If you set Boris FX to "update source", you will get flashing when viewing previews on the Media 100 video monitor.
• The Media 100 Transcoder does not support alpha channels due to limitations in the Apple M-JPEG software codec. If you want to use a Media 100 media file with alpha channel, you will need to export to the QuickTime Animation codec before the file can be used in Boris FX.
• Because of a limitation in the Media 100 Transcoder, video media created on NuBus Media 100 systems is not supported. We are working with Media 100 to resolve this issue.
